English 12: Essentials of World Literature

Course Description:
This course will help students familiarize themselves with different eras of world literature. Students will be invited to analyze the ways in which literature helps us understand more about the beliefs and traditions of different societies across the world and make connections between writings that span across several historical periods and cultures

This trimester we will cover the following:
Literature:

Writing:
Writing Responses to Literature
Writing a Resume
Grammar:
Correcting Common Spelling Errors
Grading will be broken down as listed below:
Class work 45%
Essays (1) 15%
Tests (midterm/final exam) 30%
Notebook 10%
Class work- This will consist of quizzes, quick writes, grammar and vocabulary worksheets, and assignments that support the reading.
Late work- Students may make up work missed during excused absences. No points will be deducted as long as work is turned in within the same amount of days in which the student was absent. Essays will be accepted no more than two days after the due date; 10% of the credit will be deducted for each day it is late.
Essay- There will be one major writing project this trimester worth 15% of your final grade. Grading procedures and guidelines will be given beforehand. Students are expected to follow grammatical rules and are especially required to demonstrate their understanding of conventions studied throughout the course.
Tests- You will have one midterm exam at the end of the sixth week of this trimester (worth 15% of your final grade), and one final exam at the end of the twelfth week (worth another 15% of your grade). Tests will usually be given on Thursdays. We will review at least one day before the exam and a study guide will be provided. All tests are closed book / closed notes.
Notebook- You will need to bring in a 100 composition book that is used for this class only. Your notebook will be divided into 6 sections: Literature, Journal, Grammar, Vocabulary, and Writing Applications. In order to receive full credit, your notebook must have a title page, a table of contents, have all notes and exercises stamped, and be maintained in good condition (you cannot use any of the pages within the designated sections for drawing or scribbling).
Classroom Rules
• Students must be inside the classroom before the bell rings (School policy states that students will be dropped from class with a “No Mark” once they have reached five tardies)
• Respect the rights of others to learn. This means that you must keep unnecessary noise to a minimum during class and avoid interrupting lessons.
• Cell phones must be turned off during class. If you are using your cell phone during class, it will be confiscated and will only be returned to a parent or guardian the following Monday from the office.
• Ipods, MP3 players, or any other electronic devices are not allowed during class time. If you decide to go against this rule, your device will be confiscated and will not be returned to you until your parent or guardian retrieves it from the office
• You must ask for permission before leaving the classroom. You will be given 4 hall passes for the trimester. Any unused passes may be turned in at the end of the quarter for five points each.
• No talking while the teacher is talking, someone else is talking or during reading time.
• Foul language, obscene gestures, offensive or aggressive comments of any kind will not be tolerated.
Failure to follow any of these rules will result in point deductions and/or disciplinary action:
1st offense: Warning
2nd offense: after-school detention
3rd offense: Parent notified
4th offense: Referral to Principal’s office and possible removal from class
